What Business Central already includes
Microsoft ships Copilot capabilities in Business Central: marketing text generation for items, bank reconciliation assistance that proposes matches for review, sales line suggestions, and analysis assistance on list pages. These are included rather than separately licensed and are switched on per environment. Most companies do not know they are there. The first thing we usually do is enable the relevant ones, show the people who would benefit, and establish which actually earn their place in your workflow. That costs very little and is the sensible starting point before anything custom.
Custom Copilot capabilities
Where the standard features stop, Business Central lets you build your own Copilot experiences in AL, backed by Azure OpenAI. That opens real possibilities: drafting a response from a customer's order history, explaining why a posting failed in language a non-accountant understands, suggesting a category for an incoming invoice based on how similar ones were treated. We build these as proper AL extensions with the AI grounded in your data rather than left to invent. Crucially, anything that touches a financial record proposes rather than posts. A human approves. That boundary is not negotiable in an ERP.
Where AI does not belong
We will tell you when a deterministic rule is the better answer. Much of what people ask AI to do in an ERP is genuinely a matter of logic: if the amount exceeds this, route to that person. A rule does that perfectly, cheaply, and identically every time. A model does it well most of the time, which is a downgrade. AI earns its place where the input is unstructured or the judgement is fuzzy: reading a supplier's PDF invoice, matching payment references that do not quite align, summarising a long case history. Those are genuinely hard for rules and genuinely suited to a model.

Do we pay extra for Copilot in Business Central?
The standard Copilot capabilities are included in your Business Central licence. Custom Copilot capabilities built on Azure OpenAI incur consumption charges for the AI calls, which we size and explain before building anything.
Does our ERP data leave our control?
Calls go to Azure OpenAI within your chosen region, and your data is not used to train the underlying models. This is materially different from pasting company data into a public consumer AI tool, which is what staff do when no sanctioned option exists.
Can AI post transactions automatically?
Technically possible, and we advise against it. Everything financial is proposed for human approval. The productivity gain is in the preparation of the work, not in removing the person who is accountable for it.
